Rossant were instrumental in the design and construction of Reston’s first project, Lake Anne Village. Its objectives were to develop the talents of young musicians and to give them the opportunity to present musical performances for Reston and Northern Virginia residents. The program, which operated until the mid- 1970s, held yearly summer camps for students of music and presented concerts throughout Northern Virginia. In 1972, the group performed in Lausanne, Switzerland. The collection contains correspondence, articles, photographs, and 56 audiotape reels which document the operation of the music center. Simon, Jr., is the man most responsible for the creation of Reston, Virginia. Born in New York City in 1914 and educated at Harvard, Simon took over the family real estate management and development business in 1935. In 1961, with the proceeds from the sale of a family property, Carnegie Hall, Simon purchased 6,750 acres of land in Fairfax County, Virginia, which would become Reston, Virginia. Reston is now recognized as the foremost Planned Community in the United States. Simon’s vision for Reston emphasized the quality of life for the individual in a community where people could live, work, and play. The collection consists of photographs, news clippings, promotional material and booklets relating to Reston. Also included are printed material, publications, scrapbooks, and Simon’s speeches and paperwork from various conferences he attended. Materials date from 1960 to 2006. In 1969 African American residents formed Reston Black Focus, a group dedicated to celebrating and promoting a better understanding of African-American culture. Reston Black Focus sponsored the Reston Black Arts Festival, a three-day celebration featuring African art, dance, music, poetry, and food, annually during the late 1960s through the late 1970s, as well as other programs celebrating African-American culture.
