Simon, Jr., from Reston’s management. . Concerned citizens felt the need to take responsibility for community programs and the direction in which Reston was heading. In 1987 the RCA was incorporated into the Reston Homeowners Association and both renamed the Reston Association. The Reston Association records include meeting minutes, budgets, clippings, reports, handbooks, correspondence, and general information about the association, as well as a photographic series with prints, contact sheets, slides, and negatives. Simon, Jr., is the man most responsible for the creation of Reston, Virginia. Born in New York City in 1914 and educated at Harvard, Simon took over the family real estate management and development business in 1935. In 1961, with the proceeds from the sale of a family property, Carnegie Hall, Simon purchased 6,750 acres of land in Fairfax County, Virginia, which would become Reston, Virginia. Reston is now recognized as the foremost Planned Community in the United States. Simon’s vision for Reston emphasized the quality of life for the individual in a community where people could live, work, and play. The collection consists of photographs, news clippings, promotional material and booklets relating to Reston. Also included are printed material, publications, scrapbooks, and Simon’s speeches and paperwork from various conferences he attended. Materials date from 1960 to 2006. He had been associated with Reston since 1966, when he moved there and opened his own planning firm, KRS Associates. He later created the Corporation for Community Development a planning organization which worked on a number of planning projects, particularly, a renewal of Reston's Lake Anne Village. He served on the Reston Community Association, the Dulles Corridor Task Force, and was the first president of the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce.
