An account of the resource
Architects William J. Conklin and James S. Rossant were instrumental in the design and construction of Reston’s first project, Lake Anne Village. As members of Whittlesey and Conklin, Architects (later known as Conklin and Rossant, Architects), Conklin and Rossant were responsible the original master planning of Reston and the individual design of buildings at Lake Anne. Their innovative concept to create several high-density villages, each with a village center employing mixed-use concepts, was at the heart of the Reston Master Plan approved in 1962 by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. The collection contains items that relate to the early construction and planning of Reston by Conklin and Rossant, Architects including plans, reports, correspondence, and brochures about Reston. It also contains photographs, drawings and negatives which were used in the construction and promotion of Reston. Materials date from 1966 to 1990.

Robert E. Simon, Jr., is the man most responsible for the creation of Reston, Virginia. Born in New York City in 1914 and educated at Harvard, Simon took over the family real estate management and development business in 1935. In 1961, with the proceeds from the sale of a family property, Carnegie Hall, Simon purchased 6,750 acres of land in Fairfax County, Virginia, which would become Reston, Virginia. Reston is now recognized as the foremost Planned Community in the United States. Simon’s vision for Reston emphasized the quality of life for the individual in a community where people could live, work, and play. The collection consists of photographs, news clippings, promotional material and booklets relating to Reston. Also included are printed material, publications, scrapbooks, and Simon’s speeches and paperwork from various conferences he attended. Materials date from 1960 to 2006.

The materials in the collection were collected and assembled by Planned Community Archives, Inc. (PCA), of Reston, Va. PCA was a non-profit organization comprised of individuals dedicated to collecting records documenting the origins of planned communities for scholarly study. The materials were placed on deposit at George Mason University Libraries beginning in 1986. The collection consists of a variety of materials relating to planned communities across the United States with a particular emphasis on the planned community of Reston, Virginia, and international communities as well. The collection includes correspondence, reports, promotional material, brochures, newspapers, videotapes, slides, photographs, architectural drawings, and blueprints and is dated from 1960 to 2009.

The Planned Community Archives collection is the largest collection of records pertaining to Reston, Virginia in the University Libraries. The materials in the collection were collected and assembled by Planned Community Archives, Inc. (PCA), of Reston, Va. PCA was a non-profit organization comprised of individuals dedicated to collecting records documenting the origins of planned communities for scholarly study. The materials were placed on deposit at George Mason University Libraries beginning in 1986. The collection consists of a variety of materials relating to planned communities across the United States with a particular emphasis on the planned community of Reston, Virginia, and international communities as well. The collection includes correspondence, reports, promotional material, brochures, newspapers, videotapes, slides, photographs, architectural drawings, and blueprints and is dated from 1960 to 2009.

Robert E. Simon, Jr., is the man most responsible for the creation of Reston, Virginia. Born in New York City in 1914 and educated at Harvard, Simon took over the family real estate management and development business in 1935. In 1961, with the proceeds from the sale of a family property, Carnegie Hall, Simon purchased 6,750 acres of land in Fairfax County, Virginia, which would become Reston, Virginia. Reston is now recognized as the foremost Planned Community in the United States. Simon’s vision for Reston emphasized the quality of life for the individual in a community where people could live, work, and play. The collection consists of photographs, news clippings, promotional material and booklets relating to Reston. Also included are printed material, publications, scrapbooks, and Simon’s speeches and paperwork from various conferences he attended. Materials date from 1960 to 2006.

Architects William J. Conklin and James S. Rossant were instrumental in the design and construction of Reston’s first project, Lake Anne Village. As members of Whittlesey and Conklin, Architects (later known as Conklin and Rossant, Architects), Conklin and Rossant were responsible the original master planning of Reston and the individual design of buildings at Lake Anne. Their innovative concept to create several high-density villages, each with a village center employing mixed-use concepts, was at the heart of the Reston Master Plan approved in 1962 by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. The collection contains items that relate to the early construction and planning of Reston by Conklin and Rossant, Architects including plans, reports, correspondence, and brochures about Reston. It also contains photographs, drawings and negatives which were used in the construction and promotion of Reston. Materials date from 1966 to 1990.

The Northern Virginia Music Center at Reston was established in 1967 by the Reston Foundation for Community Programs. Its objectives were to develop the talents of young musicians and to give them the opportunity to present musical performances for Reston and Northern Virginia residents. The program, which operated until the mid- 1970s, held yearly summer camps for students of music and presented concerts throughout Northern Virginia. In 1972, the group performed in Lausanne, Switzerland. The collection contains correspondence, articles, photographs, and 56 audiotape reels which document the operation of the music center. The Planned Community Archives collection is the largest collection of records pertaining to Reston, Virginia in the University Libraries. The materials in the collection were collected and assembled by Planned Community Archives, Inc. (PCA), of Reston, Va. PCA was a non-profit organization comprised of individuals dedicated to collecting records documenting the origins of planned communities for scholarly study. The materials were placed on deposit at George Mason University Libraries beginning in 1986. The collection consists of a variety of materials relating to planned communities across the United States with a particular emphasis on the planned community of Reston, Virginia, and international communities as well. The collection includes correspondence, reports, promotional material, brochures, newspapers, videotapes, slides, photographs, architectural drawings, and blueprints and is dated from 1960 to 2009.

An account of the resource
Robert E. Simon, Jr., is the man most responsible for the creation of Reston, Virginia. Born in New York City in 1914 and educated at Harvard, Simon took over the family real estate management and development business in 1935. In 1961, with the proceeds from the sale of a family property, Carnegie Hall, Simon purchased 6,750 acres of land in Fairfax County, Virginia, which would become Reston, Virginia. Reston is now recognized as the foremost Planned Community in the United States. Simon’s vision for Reston emphasized the quality of life for the individual in a community where people could live, work, and play. The collection consists of photographs, news clippings, promotional material and booklets relating to Reston. Also included are printed material, publications, scrapbooks, and Simon’s speeches and paperwork from various conferences he attended. Materials date from 1960 to 2006.

Patrick Kane was a consultant, educator, advisor, and activist addressing planning and community needs in Reston, Virginia. He had been associated with Reston since 1966, when he moved there and opened his own planning firm, KRS Associates. He later created the Corporation for Community Development a planning organization which worked on a number of planning projects, particularly, a renewal of Reston's Lake Anne Village. He served on the Reston Community Association, the Dulles Corridor Task Force, and was the first president of the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce. The Patrick Kane papers include items related to Patrick Kane's community related service activities and his professional life. The papers include correspondence, Reston materials, and articles from various publications, and materials pertaining to the Dulles Corridor Task Force. The collection spans the years 1967 to 2002.
